Netminder headed to Humboldt for 2011-12 season
Wednesday 09.07.11 / 11:09 AMAfter two years with the Medicine Hat Tigers, goaltender Deven Dubyk is moving on.
The fan-favourite affectionately known as "Dubie" by the orange and black faithful will ply his trade in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League for the 2011-12 campaign.
"It was a tough overeager situation here, and I didn't crack the top three so I've decided to play Junior 'A' in Humboldt, Saskatchewan for the Broncos," states Dubyk.
"They have a great organization there and they're hosting the RBC Cup. It's the opportunity of a lifetime and at the end of May I want to be hoisting that cup over my head."

Dubyk earned his first 2 WHL shutouts to end last year's regular season |
At the outset of the 2009-10 season, the Tigers sent prospect Michael Forsyth and a 6th round bantam pick to the Moose Jaw Warriors in return for Dubyk and forward Matt MacKay.
It's a deal that worked out well for the Tigers, as Dubyk played a key role in the team's post-season push last year. Dubyk says the experience was the hilite of his WHL career.
"Coming off an injury and getting those back to back shutouts to close the regular season and then going into playoffs; Bunzy went down with injuries and I stepped up. I didn't put up the greatest numbers but I got the four wins and helped get us to the next round."
As for leaving the Tabbies, it's bittersweet for Dubyk. While he leaves behind some great friends and teammates, he will also be re-uniting with a good friend in Humboldt.
"I have a buddy there I played AAA minor hockey with, and I've been talking to him and he says it's a great group of guys and a great organization and I'm excited to be on his team. I haven't been on his team since we were 16-17 and it's going to be a fun time. I'm going to make the most of my opportunity there."
"It's sad to leave a great organization like the Tigers, and a great group of guys. I know I'll miss them and hopefully they miss me, and hopefully they'll make a long playoff push."
With the Broncos set to host the RBC Cup, Dubyk knows there will plenty of eyeballs in Humboldt this year. So, if a WHL team finds itself in need of a quality veteran, would he take the opportunity to come back to the league?
"I've got to be loyal to the Humboldt Broncos," says Dubyk. "They gave up a roster player for me so I've got to be loyal to them and stick with them and that's what I'm going to do. If someone comes knocking at my door, I've just got to politely turn them down and say I'm loyal to this team and I'm going to stick with them."
With that kind of loyalty and team-first mentality, Deven is sure to be a fan-favourite once more in Humboldt. It might be in a different arena, but chants of "Dubie! Dubie! Dubie!" are likely to ring out again this coming hockey season.
"Hopefully Humboldt does that for me. It'd be a pleasant surprise."
