TIGERS LOSE 4-2 TO OIL KINGSMar 16, 2012 - 17:17 MDT
The Tigers hosted the league leading Edmonton Oil Kings on Friday night at the Arena. The Oil Kings had secured first place in the Eastern Conference but the Tigers were still battling to hold off Calgary from third place. The Tigers jumped out quickly to a lead but the Oil Kings would come back to add to their comfortable lead in the Eastern playoff race.
Boston Leier got the Tigers on the board and up a goal early in the first period. The goal was his 15th of the season and was assisted by Scott McKay and Alex Theriau. The lead wouldn't last long though as the Oil Kings scored shortly after and continued to add three more goals over the next two periods to take a 4-1 lead. Emerson Etem would add his league leading 61st goal with only four seconds remaining in the game. The goal gave the players a bit of a boost but it was too late. Curtis Valk and James Bettauer picked up the assists on the goal.
Mark Pysyk tied up the game for the Oil Kings shortly after Leier opened the scoring. It was his 6th of the season and was assisted by Michael St. Croix. Henrik Samuelsson added to their lead before the end of the first period. It was his 7th of the season and was assisted by Stephane Legault and Cody Corbett. Curtis Lazar scored the lone goal of the second period to put the Kings up 3-1. It was his 18th of the season. Legault picked up his second assist of the night and Ryan Dech picked up the other. Martin Gernat scored the final Edmonton goal with under five minutes remaining in the game. The goal gave the Kings a comfortable three goal lead that allowed them to focus on tightening up defensively for the remainder of the game. T.J. Foster picked up the lone assist on the goal.
Tyler Bunz didn't get the bounces to go his way on this night but stayed determined in net making 24 saves. Laurent Brossoit had a great game in net for Edmonton. The Tigers outshot the Oil Kings 38-28 but Brossoit made 36 saves to help his team earn the victory.
The Tigers' special teams had a rough night on the power play going 0 for 8. The Tigers game up two power plays to the Oil Kings but were able to kill off both penalties.
