Medicine Hat Tigers vs Swift Current Broncos

TIGER TALES: The Medicine Hat Tigers enter tonight's game with a record of 6-10-2-1 following their 6-2 loss to the Kootenay Ice last night in Cranbrook. Kootenay jumped out to a 3-0 first period lead and led 5-2 after 40 minutes of play. The loss snapped the Tigers three game unbeaten streak. Both Tigers goals came in the second period. Martin Cibak scored his fourth goal of the season. The 19-year-old Slovakian has now scored one goal in each of the last four games. Rookie Chris St. Jacques scored his eighth of the season, tying him with captain Berkeley Buchko for the most on the team. Ben Thomson assisted on Cibak's goal giving him 22 points, best on the Tigers. Rookie Ben McMullin got his thrid start of the season in goal and was pulled in the first period. Kyle Kettles played the remainder of the game stopping 25 of 28 shots.
PAW PRINTS: This is the second meeting of the season between the Tigers and the Swift Current Broncos. In their first meeting October 2 at the Arena, the Tigers doubled up on the Broncos 4-2. Berkeley Buchko led the Tigers offence with one goal and one assist. Also scoring that night for the Tigers were Josh Maser, Tyson Mulock and Brad Voth. In goal, Kyle Kettles played and stopped 22 of 24 shots for the win. The win October 2 was the first for the Tigers over the Broncos since November 22, 1997 in an 8-2 decision at the Arena. Medicine Hat has not won a game at the Centennial Civic Centre in Swift Current since a 6-5 win November 10, 1995. The Tigers first game in Swift Current this season will be Sunday December 19. The Tigers top point getter after 11 home games so far this season is Ben Thomson. He has 12 points on one goal and 11 assists. Buchko and Paul Elliott are next with nine points apiece. Buchko and Mulock lead the team in goals scored on Arena ice with five each. In goal, Kettles has played in nine of the home games, posting a 4-4-1-0 record and a 3.85 GAA. Ben McMullin has played one home game between the pipes in the 4-3 overtime loss to Prince Albert on October 23. The Tigers remain fifth in the Central division standings, and are 10th overall in the Eastern conference. The Tigers longest winning streak to date is three games (October 1-5). The team's longest losing skid is also three games on two occasions (September 25-29) & (October 10-15). After 18 games last season, the Tigers were 7-11-0 and after 19 games one year ago were 7-12-0. The Tigers currently have 24 players on roster which includes two goalies, seven defencemen and 15 forwards. Medicine Hat has nine 16-year-olds. There are no injuries to report.

LEAGUE LEADERS: Second year centre Ben Thomson remained in the Top 20 in League Scoring with his one assist last night for 22 points on five goals and 17 assists. The 17-year-old from Coaldale is tied for third place in the Top 10 for Assists. Three Tigers are in the Top 10 in Rookie Scoring. Defenceman Jay Bouwmeester is fourth with 14 points (5G, 9A). Chris St. Jacques is fifth with 13 (8G, 5A) and Tyson Mulock is sixth with 12 (7G, 5A). Two Tigers are in the Top 10 in Defencemen Scoring. Paul Elliott is fifth with five goals and 10 assists, while Bouwmeester is the lone rookie, tied for sixth spot with 14 points. Bouwmeester and Mulock remain the only two rookies in the Top 10 in Game Winning Goals, tied for third place with two apiece. Elliott is in the Top 10 in Power Play Points. He is tied for sixth spot with 11 points. Josh Maser moved back into the Top 10 in Penalty Minutes, the 20-year-old from Medicine Hat is 10th with 63 minutes.
SPECIAL TEAMS: Entering tonight's game, Medicine Hat's power play unit is ranked eighth overall, scoring 17 goals in 90 opportunities (18.9%). On home ice, the Tigers power play is 15th overall 9/57 (15.8%). Penalty killing, the Tigers are 16th overall, surrendering 24 opposition power play goals in 99 chances (75.8%). At the Arena after 11 home games, the Tigers penalty killing unit is 17th 17/58 (70.7%). The Tigers have yielded five shorthanded goals and scored twice shorthanded. Medicine Hat is the third least penalized team in the league with 416 minutes in 18 games for an average of 23.1 minutes per game. The league average is 26.9 minutes per game.
